A Dream for Sarah

Hi. My name is Katherine and I am Sarah’s older sister. I am 12 years old now and am in the 6th grade. This year I have started to play the flute. I am trying to learn to read music and master the middle register. I also enjoy writing short stories. Here's a story I wrote in the 2nd grade about my sister, Sarah.

“My sister Sarah has something wrong with her brain called seizures.  She will have them forever.  If Sarah gets too excited she will get too hot and have a seizure.  I saw the biggest seizure she ever had.  The fire truck and a helicopter came to our house and I had to see it all.  It was very scary.  Sarah has to eat a special diet and she has to eat some pretty gross stuff like butter and cream with oil.  I also eat some of Sarah’s food, like snow cones made with ice and sugarless flavoring.  I am very sad that she has seizures and that she needs to eat that special diet.  Seizures are something some people are born with and Sarah is just one of those people.  Now, all we have to do is protect her.”

Sarah is still on the ketogenic diet, but does not have to eat as many gross foods and we do not have to weigh every thing that she eats. It is also very exciting that Alfie, her new service dog, has alerted to her seizures. It is amazing! When Sarah got her service dog, Alfie, my family adopted Faye from 4 Paws for Ability for me. Although she wasn’t able to graduate from the dog-training program, she is the sweetest, dorkiest (in a good way), fluffiest, dog on the planet. I am so happy she is my dog. It is still very tough living with a sister with epilepsy. In the summer when it is hot, we can’t do things like other families because heat triggers Sarah’s seizures. The swimming pool just seems to say, "wouldn't it be nice to go for a swim?" It mocks me. Like other little sisters, Sarah can get on my nerves. But, over all she is a great sister and I love her very much.

I also want to tell you about my Dad.  He is my hero.  He is in the Army and had to go to Iraq for a whole year.  I missed him very much and was very happy when he came home.  I hope he does not have to go away again.
